Nevada Traffic Law Update: What You Need to Know About Civil vs. Criminal Violations
As of January 1, 2023, Nevada law (AB 116) reclassified most minor traffic violations as civil infractions rather than criminal offenses, eliminating the risk of arrest or bench warrants for non-payment.
Civil citations can be handled through payment or a contested hearing within 90 days. If contested, any required bond cannot exceed the amount of the fine for the ticket. The law also allows for potential reduction or dismissal of certain violations, including amending moving violations to non-moving violations when fines are paid in full and/or traffic school is completed.
