We’ve seen some amazing sports venues open in Las Vegas in the recent past. Whether it’s the T-mobile Arena, home of the NHL Golden Knights, or Las Vegas Ballpark, home to the Pacific Coast League Las Vegas Aviators, our town is home to some brand new premium sports venues constructed with the latest construction methods and equipped with the latest technology to make the fan’s experience amazing.
It’s not every day however, even in Las Vegas, that a community becomes host to a $2 billion NFL stadium. Within 10 months, on July 31, 2020, however, Las Vegas will witness the opening of its new football stadium, officially named Allegiant Stadium, which will be the home of the Las Vegas Raiders, when the NFL team moves here from Oakland, CA, for its 2020 season. This location will also be the new home of the UNLV Rebels NCAA college football team.
It appears that no expense is being spared to make it a showplace of the football universe. Construction on the venue is about 60 percent complete at this point, and all indicators point to an on-time completion in time for the 2020 NFL season. While its certain fans will be nothing short of amazed when they attend games and other events in the new stadium, here’s a few of its features that will make it a showplace.
Smoked Glass Enclosed
The stadium will have an imposing look from the outside, with a steel beam super structure underneath supporting a smoked glass skin in Raiders colors of black and silver. The glass skin is currently being installed. The glass will be translucent, allowing those inside to see out to the surroundings, and will allow those outside to have a limited view of what’s inside.
ETFE Roof
Since the topping out ceremony on August 5th, where the last steel beam of the super structure was placed, preparations have been proceeding to install the roof. Being lifted into place for the next 6 weeks are a gridwork of stainless-steel cables up to 3” in diameter which will support the transparent roof of the stadium which will be fabricated from a substance called Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). ETFE has been used in other sports arenas such as the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and the Beijing National Aquatics Center (used for the 2008 Olympics). The substance transfers light better than glass, however, blocks dangerous ultraviolet rays, and is about 1/100th the weight of glass. The roof will not retract but is permanently in place. However fresh air will be allowed in the stadium via the next feature.
North-facing Lanai Doors
Imagine game-day watching the Raiders game on TV, and as the program breaks for commercial you see views through the open end of the stadium, not at the skyline of some one of the other 30 or so NFL cities across the country, but of the Las Vegas Strip. The stadium is built, not on a straight north south orientation, but slightly offset from SW to NE. The north end of the stadium will open via lanai doors the height of the stadium, which when opened will feature a stunning view of the Strip.
West-facing Video Wall
On the entire west side of the stadium facing I-15 will feature a huge translucent video wall. The video wall will be used to promote upcoming events at the venue, and on game day could be used to display replays and scores of the current game in progress.
Movable Grass Field Tray
Mark Davis, owner of the Raiders, specified early in the planning process, that NFL football should be played on natural grass, not artificial turf. To grow a grass field in the desert in an enclosed stadium would be impossible. In order to accommodate a real grass field, the entire field will be moved on a 1-million-pound tray, which in between games will be slid through a large opening at field level, to the outside of the stadium, and moved into place for the game. This is similar to the method be used in the State Farm Stadium in Phoenix AZ, home to the Arizona Cardinals NFL team. The UNLV Rebels on the other hand, will play on artificial turf which will be located under the field tray.
Due to the variable nature of the field level, the stadium may also play host to other sport and non-sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, the NFL draft, NCAA final four basketball, major league soccer, various concerts and music festivals, Monster Jam drag racing, among others. Already announced are the Las Vegas Bowl college football game in 2020, and the PAC 12 Championship games for 2020 and 2021.
