Police kicked off Labor Day weekend Friday with three checkpoints. Many people wonder why police tell the public where the checkpoints will be located.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol officials, Nevada law requires police to inform the public within 24 hours of the general locations of DUI checkpoints.
Additionally, by informing the public of checkpoints or increased patrols, lawmakers and police say they hope people will think twice before drinking and driving. Authorities say they are trying to encourage people to call a cab or use a designated driver if they drink.
Police say an increased police presence is a significant deterrence for drunk drivers. NHP representatives say a successful DUI checkpoint equates to fewer drivers arrested, not more. By getting the word out, police are able to warn and educate the public about the dangers of drinking and driving.
