Police officers in Henderson are keeping a close eye on marked crosswalks for those who cross streets illegally and drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians.
The police department said an official enforcement period is set to begin on Friday and run through Sept. 16.
Officers said the crackdown is important to control pedestrian deaths on the road.
“Being safe on the roadway is the responsibility of both motorists and pedestrians,” Henderson Police Chief Patrick Moers said. “It’s important to share the roads and stay alert no matter if you are in a car, on a bike or on foot.”
According to Henderson police, 36 pedestrianS in Nevada were killed in traffic crashes in 2010. That number jumped to 47 in 2011. Currently, 35 people have died while traveling on foot this year.
The enforcement is part of a Joining Forces Grant from the Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.
