Between April 1 and April 15, law enforcement agencies in the Las Vegas area and throughout Nevada will focus on enforcing Nevada laws against distracted driving, running red lights and speeding. The Joining Forces campaign is a multi-jurisdictional program that focuses law enforcement on specific violations in an effort to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.
Under the Joining Forces program, grant money is made available to local police departments to provide for additional personnel needed to enforce the particular area of focus during the campaign. Additionally, with all levels of law enforcement from local police to highway patrol focused on the same area of enforcement, the program seeks to raise awareness of traffic laws and change risky drivers’ behavior. The program aims to reduce fatalities on Nevada roadways.
Distracted driving has been a focus of several Joining Forces campaigns. Nevada law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices while driving, including cell phones, MP3 players, games, GPS systems, among others. This law has been in effect since 2012. Any use of these items will become an area of primary enforcement during the campaign. Other campaigns have targeted seat belt usage, pedestrian safety and impaired driving.
