The idea behind ridesharing, is that you request a ride through an app on your smartphone, and shortly thereafter, a private person pulls up driving their personal car and takes you where you want to go. You pay a fee to the rideshare company for arranging the ride, and the cars are usually clean and reasonably nice, however, the quality control for the condition of the car is in the hands of the driver. You may have some nice music playing, you may be 
offered a water to drink, the conversation may or may not be interesting, but it’s a less expensive way to get around than the alternative, which was taxis.
Under ride-sharing however, you could end up with some expensive fares during peak hours, when there’s lots of people going places, and not enough cars to pick everyone up…that’s called surge pricing and it’s probably the biggest complaint anyone has about ride-sharing.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has an idea that’s a variation on the ride share theme. If you want to get to or from anywhere on the strip and that includes from Downtown Las Vegas to the M Resort including McCarren Airport, you can use an app to request an 11-person, luxury van, with complimentary Wi-Fi, USB chargers, and wheel chair accessibility. It’s called Trip to Strip, and its operating now in Las Vegas. The big news, there is no surge pricing.
RTC officially launched the Trip to Strip service, June 25, 2019, and in usual Las Vegas fashion, the inaugural ride carried Las Vegas notables, such as Mayor Carolyn Goodman and former Mayor Oscar Goodman (with martini), some show girls, some Cirque du Soleil performers, some Chippendale dancers, and ventriloquist Terry Fator and his turtle, Winston.
But RTC has an objective in mind with the new service, which is to reduce congestion and the number of vehicles on the road, including cars operating with services such as Uber and Lyft. Tina Quigly, CEO of RTC said, “Traditionally, when you think of public transit, we are that fixed route bus whether there’s someone at the stop or not. To continue to be relevant and significant and a mode and a true choice for our constituents in Southern Nevada, then we need to be piloting things like this and testing it.”
There are plans to expand this service to other parts of the Las Vegas valley, and connecting it to other transit options that may become available in the future. The app for hailing this service can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store, and Google Play.
