Law enforcement and the group Stop DUI are encouraging valley motorists to stay off the road if drinking this Halloween.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 41 percent of all highway fatalities in the U.S. during the 2010 Halloween season involved motorists with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.
“The most frightening part of Halloween isn’t the scary costumes. It’s being told an innocent child was killed by a drunk driver” said Sandy Heverly, executive director for Stop DUI. “12-year-old Faith Love was killed while crossing the street on Halloween night October 31, 2011.”
Stop DUI and law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for impaired drivers this Halloween.
According to Stop DUI, alcohol related crashes cost $37 billion per year, and one alcohol related DUI fatality occurs every 51 minutes.
Stop DUI offers the following tips to help keep motorists and pedestrians safe:
- Plan a safe and sober way home before drinking.
- Designate a sober driver and leave your keys at home.
- If you drink, or use drugs that impair your ability to drive, use public transportation, walk, or take a cab.
- If you host a party, make sure nobody leaves the gathering in a condition that would endanger others.
- If you see a driver you think is impaired, call 911.
