Drivers want clarification about the speed limit and time windows for High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes along U.S. 95.
One driver wants to know the speed limit for the HOV lanes, since he says drivers exceed the normal 65 mph limit designated for U.S. 95.
The speed limit in the HOV lanes is 65 mph, just like the rest of the freeway. Traffic8 has asked Nevada Highway Patrol for increased speed enforcement.
Another driver asked if cars containing one occupant can use the HOV lanes outside of designated hours. The answer is yes.
HOV lanes were going to be 24 hours a day, but there was public pushback, and some people raised concerns about enforcement and emergency response times.
So, transportation officials settled on the hours of 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday when at least two people must be in the car in order to use the lanes.
Outside of those two five-hour windows, single motorists may use these HOV lanes. Emergency vehicles and motorcycles are exempt from these restrictions. They can use the lanes any time.
