There are a lot of numbers thrown out when it comes to how may people are wrongly accused for domestic violence each year. I recently read that every 1 million people are wrongly accused of domestic violence, that is absurd to me. It makes me wonder if police are really trying to investigate whether or not the charges are justified. These false allegations hurt the real victims.
In 2006, I was in the middle of an awful divorce (I don’t know of a good divorce, but..). We were having an argument, and she snapped and started grabbing me, I just got out of the house as quickly as possible, and over to a friends. In her anger, she called the police and said that I had hit her. I had scratches up and down my arms, and a ripped shirt. When the police arrived, they could clearly tell that she had not been hit, and that I had been physically assaulted. They asked me if I would also like to press charges, but I declined.
The sheriff that showed up, said to me, because she called, we have no choice but to arrest you, I have to book you. He then proceeded to tell me that he knew I didn’t touch her and would be willing to testify for me. It didn’t sit well with me that because she was female, all she had to do was to make an accusation, and I was arrested under false pretenses. I ended up getting all the charges dropped, and the policeman did testify for me. That instance got me thinking, how many other people have this happened to, how ridiculous.
I have read many reports stating that most women that are murdered, are murdered by a partner, and usually instances of domestic violence are in their past, so I can understand the seriousness of the situation. I just wish that there were better laws, and more police work done before an arrest was made. Hopefully this will change in the near future.
