Since April 10, North Las Vegas police have issued 34 citations for cell phone violations in an enforcement event targeting distracted drivers. One of the people who received a citation, was me.
I was guilty, it really is a bad habit and it’s tough to break. I answered a phone call from my mom while I was driving on Bonanza near Las Vegas Boulevard. My son was having some health problems and I was awaiting an update on his condition. My mom called, and without thinking I answered. Yes my reason was valid, but a law is a law, and according to the officer, I was driving all over the road. He was nice enough to laugh it off after I explained the situation, but I received the citation none the less. I can only imagine how much worse the situation would have been had I caused an accident because of my neglect. I understand as well as anyone now how hard old habits are to break, but also the importance of this law. Since the incident, I only talk while driving hands free, so I learned my lesson. I thank the police for enforcing this law, I’m sure it’s not what they signed up to do, but it is necessary.
While enforcing the cell phone law, they also issued the following citations:
- 36 driver’s license violations;
- 29 registration violations;
- 19 equipment violations;
- 29 no insurance violations;
- 10 red light violations;
- 30 other violations;
- 29 warnings issued;
- 39 Speeding Tickets.
