The District Attorney’s Office confirmed recently that the two nurse anesthetists charged in the 2007 hepatitis C outbreak case have rejected plea deals offered by prosecutors.
According to an attorney for one of the nurses, the involved medical staff is now facing a grand jury murder investigation following the death of a patient after allegedly contracting hepatitis C from the clinic. Rodolfo T. Meana, 77, died from complications of hepatitis C. Meana developed cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure, spending the last few weeks of his life in great pain.
The nurses standing trial on felony neglect and fraud charges are Ronald Lakeman and Keith Mathahs. Dr. Dipak Desai, the center of attention in the scandal, has also been charged first-degree murder.
