Nevadans should be wary of using unofficial websites to renew their vehicle registration, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
DMV Director Troy Dillard said his agency has received a number of calls and emails from residents who used a website during the renewal process that charged them for information that could have been obtained for free on the department’s official website.
“Most of the sites state clearly that they are not official government sites,” Dillard said in a statement. “However, some people don’t read carefully and end up paying for materials they could have obtained free of charge.”
Dillard said the unofficial sites use paid ads that look similar to the results that are returned while using a search engine. He said Nevadans should always use the official website of the department at dmvnv.com to conduct their DMV business.
“Our site is comprehensive,” Dillard said. “Someone needing licensing or registration help can find the information they need free of charge.”
Dillard said there is little his agency can do about the private websites.
