A crosswalk safety enforcement event in North Las Vegas on Thursday uncovered a disturbing trend. While police were targeting drivers and pedestrians not looking out for one another, they discovered very dangerous driving practices in school zones.
School has been in session for nearly two weeks and police are still getting concerned calls about drivers not following traffic safety laws near schools.
A majority of those violations have been drivers speeding or talking on their cellphones through school zones. Police handed out several tickets to drivers guilty of those violations.
The danger of speeding through a school zone has to do with stopping time. If you’re going faster than 15 MPH, it’s harder to slam on your breaks and stop if a child runs or steps out into the street.
“Children are small and hard to see and that’s the reason why they do things unexpectedly like darting out into traffic,” Lt. Randy Salyer with the North Las Vegas Police Dept. said. “And that’s why it’s really important for motorists to slow down to 15 MPH- because that way, if a child presents themselves that wasn’t previously seen, the motorist is going slower so they can stop quicker.”
