Undercover Metro police officers were hanging out at a busy intersection Thursday morning looking for jaywalkers and drivers not obeying crosswalk laws.
The officers were watching the intersection at Durango and Westcliff Drives. They are trying to raise awareness to pedestrian safety before school starts up again.
“I think the message is clear and hopefully it will carry on through the start of school where you will also see enforcement action taking place on the city roadways and streets,” Metro Police Sergeant John Leon said.
According to Sgt. Leon, the biggest problems are speeding and inattentive drivers. According to Metro, officers conducted 52 car stops during the crackdown effort. They wrote 44 citations and 35 of them were for either failure to yield to a pedestrian or passing a vehicle stopped for a pedestrian.
The department will be holding more of these types of operations around school zones after the school year starts.
