In related stories, both Clark County School District (CCSD) Police and Henderson Police forces have announced plans to focus on traffic violations having to do with the opening of schools later this month.
Las Vegas Police to Focus on School Zones and Stopped Busses
CCSD Police spokesman Robert Mayer asks all drivers to, “Drive responsibly, slow down. Don’t drive under substances that impact them. Police aren’t going to be everywhere. We try to be, but we will be out there.”
In the past year, 15 school-aged children were killed in auto-related crashes. Police plan on patrolling near schools to focus on drivers disobeying speed and other traffic laws around schools.
Stopping for school busses will also receive police attention during this back to school season. Erin Breen of the Nevada Department of Traffic Safety indicates that Clark County has done poorly in this area in the past. “We’ve been doing this project for eight years and we range between 75,000 and 80,000 violations. We’d very much like that to be zero this year.”
Henderson Police Concentrate on Pedestrian Safety
Henderson Police will be holding a Joining Forces campaign in preparation for the new school year. This campaign will use “saturation patrols” which will target intersections with clearly marked crosswalks. This Joining Forces campaign will conclude August 24.
This campaign will focus on drivers who are not paying attention to pedestrians in crosswalks, and also pedestrians who are crossing outside of crosswalks or are otherwise crossing unsafely or illegally.
There were 100 pedestrian deaths in Nevada in 2017, which represents a 25% increase over the 2016 pedestrian death total.
