Usually when you go to the DMV you expect to spend several hours there. You arrive, wait in line to get a number, and then sit and wait until your number is called. The process can require you to take half a day or more off from work to get your business done. It’s not that the employees are inefficient, usually when you finally do sit down to handle business, the employees are very knowledgeable and handle your issue with speed and good cheer. It’s just there are so many people there needing to get their issues resolved. People have started businesses just to do the waiting for you.
However, Nevada DMV has selected a new vendor for their lobby scheduling system, and they now report that wait times for walk in customers has been reduced by 42% while actually handling 22% more customers. This translates into a drop of 20 minutes of waiting for the average walk in customer. How did they accomplish this?
The New Lobby Scheduling System
More than a year ago, the contract the DMV had with the old scheduling system expired. At the beginning of 2019 a phased rollout for the new vendor began with implementation at the Reno office. During this time DMV customers in Las Vegas were unable to make appointments at DMV’s throughout the valley, and everybody became a walk-in customer. Fortunately, that didn’t last too long, and by March, the new system was implemented in Las Vegas.
The new system was provided by a Swedish company called QMatic. The new system allowed for making appointments for many additional services that the old scheduling system couldn’t do. For example, if your license was suspended, or you wanted an appointment for a written test, you had to walk in to handle it. The new system allows you to make appointments for these services. However, it also allows DMV to better manage where they put agents to handle the flow of incoming customers, which the old system either didn’t do, or didn’t do very well.
Even the Governor is Happy
“The DMV has risen to that challenge by working tirelessly to decrease average wait times by nearly half an hour for customers across Nevada. Many Nevadans, myself included, have stood in a long line at the DMV in the past, and it’s great to see the DMV implementing state-of-the-art, time-saving tools to ensure our citizens can get back to work, school, or home in as little time as possible,” said Governor Steve Sisolak when he got the news about the improvements.
DMV Director Julie Butler stated, “I’m very pleased with these decreased wait times and the performance of both our new system and our staff. The DMV team is committed to serving our customers as efficiently as possible, and we’re doing just that. We will continue to look for innovative ways to serve the motoring public in the years ahead.”
While it’s great news that walk-in times have been reduced, you can further reduce your time at the DMV by making an appointment. When you arrive at your appointment time, In most cases, you’ll be talking with a DMV representative within minutes after arriving. DMV also provides many services by use of Kiosks which allow for handling routine services, such as renewing registrations and licenses, without the need to speak to an agent.
