UPDATE – DMV Offices are closed due to the COVID-19 Outbreak until further notice. A 90-Day Extension has been issued for all expiring documents. The Deadline for Real ID has been rescheduled to October 1, 2021.
NOTICE: If you wish to board an aircraft for travel within the United States, after October 1, 2020, your standard Nevada driver’s license will not be sufficient. A passport or military ID among other documents will be required, OR between now and October 1 you can upgrade your Nevada Driver’s License to a Real ID.
What is a Real ID?
A Real ID is a state issued driver’s license or state ID, that has been verified by enhanced document requirements set forth by the federal government. When you renew your license or if your license won’t renew between now and October 1, you may obtain a Real ID at DMV. The Real ID will allow you to use your driver’s license to board aircraft, for domestic flights, enter federal buildings, visit military bases, among other uses.
Other identification, such as a U.S. Passport, U.S. Military ID, Permanent Resident Card, among others will allow boarding on domestic flights without a need for the Real ID.
How Do I know if my Nevada ID is Real ID compliant?
The easiest way is to look at the driver’s license or state ID. If there is a white star surrounded by a gold circle in the upper right side of the license, the ID is Real ID compliant. Other than the circled star, there is no difference between the two ID’s in appearance. The Real ID however requires additional proofs of Identity and Residency.
Documents Needed to Obtain a Real ID
If you do not have a current Real ID from another state, or you do not have a current U.S. Passport, you may be required to show a birth certificate, proof of social security number, and 2 documents Nevada residency.
The Nevada DMV website shows a detailed list of required documents, however, the general list of required document to obtain a real ID are:
You must present all of the following:
- Proof of Identity (one document) AND
- If you have changed your name, Proof of All Name Change(s) AND
- Proof of Social Security number AND
- Proof of your Nevada residential address (two documents) AND
- an Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card (DMV 002)
If you license expires between now and October 1, you can upgrade to a Real ID as part of the renewal process and there won’t be an additional fee for the Real ID. If you elect to upgrade and your license does not expire between now and October 1, the fees for the upgrade are: $9.25 for a driver’s license, $8.25 for a State ID, and $13.25 for a commercial license.
